Winterness

His shadow, embedded in ice
frozen in time,
Inescapable in ways unimaginable
with cold that numbs the very soul,
winterness

Night train, with no destination in sight
on the broken hands of time,
a window seat overlooking an arctic world
searching for signs of his life,
winterness

Eyes cry freezing rain
a polarized crystalline blue
with hopes of some homeward bound image
but it’s never safe from zero
winterness

michael’s on ice,
a seasonal flatline in black
like the snow-tipped mountains of forever
with a soul numbing wind of 1 below zero,
winterness

The snow will be gone and the sun upon your back before you know it. Your mood will have lightened and I can guarantee that within a blink, friends, sunshine and wonderful beach walks will abound.
    Hang in there ~m….
You never know what’s around the corner……

Winterness, I like that. It has a softness to it.
You do a very good job here of portraying someone who desperately wants to feel something other than numb. I get the sense the speaker is soul searching because he/she believes something to be ‘wrong’ with them; for what they’re feeling–this numbness, this cold, these tears that cannot fall for freezing.

One of the things I love so much about poetry is that you capture a moment, just one, when you write. And that is exactly what you find here, we are invited into this speaker’s moment–where he/she feels they either have to figure out what is ‘wrong’, or figure out a way to escape. Anything else is “unimaginable”. Because they simply cannot go on feeling nothing, feeling frozen.

    I really, really like it.

Have a hot toddy. That should help.

How selfish we are that we take enjoyment from your pain that you put into words, but that IS what we do. We suck the life from you in an effort to entertain ourselves. In doing so, however, I think we give you a bit of what you need as well. So, I guess it’s a symbiotic relationship we have.

This was brilliant – and I am well satisfied.

P.S. You MUST see “Shackleton” (the Kenneth Branagh dramatization) – your photo calls it to mind, along with Coleridge’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” (another tortured soul).

We gotta get you a nice pot of chili or soup – that’ll warm ya up- or just get that gorgeous wife of yours to give ya a big bear hug :)

I know that’s now what you meant… but I’m tired and all I can offer is chili ….

Love to you and yours this Christmas and always!
