Regardless of where you stand on the issue of the U.S. involvement in
Iraq , here’s a sobering statistic.
There has been a monthly average of 160,000 troops in the theatre of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2,112 deaths.
That gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers per month.
The firearm death rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000 persons for the same period. That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the U.S. Capital than you are in Iraq.
Conclusion:
The U.S. should pull out of Washington . . . or not

Yep, Henry Rollins pointed out much the same when he said that a child was more likely to be shot in Washington than in Gaza.
I’m picking up what you’re putting down and I must say I’m impressed with your ability to deduce. Not many people have that talent. Those stats are a little scary, yet I have no problem believing them. These days I think we could all stand a little less Washington…

Speaking of Iraq….. my son should be on his way back as I write this! It takes them about 3 days to get back, though. I think they stop at every MCAS along the way.
Finally, a voice of reason.
Kinda like the New York Times article citing the murder rate amongst returning soldiers, the part they didn’t include though was that in comparison to non military citizens they were only about %25 percent as likely to kill someone.
My husband got us lost in the the bad part of D.C. last summer. I’m glad this happened in the daytime and that we made it out of there alive . . . especially when one of my sons blurted out something racial. Oakland isn’t much better.
Thanks for sharing that statistic. It’s refreshing to find a rational thought amid the media hype.
